Two weeks after Traveler published this story about building a commercial highway across Serengeti National Park, the government of Tanzania has tabled the project. In a official letter dated June 22, Tanzanias Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism announced that although a commercial highway will be built in the region to meet the countrys economic development needs, the road will not pass inside Serengeti National Park and will not affect the migration route. Serengeti Watch, an advocacy organization opposed to the highway and cited in the story, declared a battle has been won, but noted the struggle to save the Serengeti will go on. We agree. Traveler applauds the decision by Tanzanian authorities that the planned highway will not cut across the world-famous national park. —The Editors

Update: For a less optimistic interpretation of this decision, see this post by Luke Dollar of the Big Cats Initiative on Nat Geo Newswatch blog.
